I would not come to that judgment too soon. I feel that the level of awareness of the average person always leaves much to be desired in the minds of a small minority. For instance there is a quote by Oscar Wilde which goes something like,

'The modern artist only sees what the public sees and the public doesn't see anything.'

And this was late 1800s. I'm sure such examples have always existed, so it's hard to say...

Another way to look at it is that there is no NEED for grand literature or complex ideas anymore. As a society, we are attuned to the simplest explanation and more and more tasks are being automated. So, we live in vain and vanity and are content with it. Why spend hours parsing and understanding a complex piece of art when there are quick fixes everywhere?

Its more than a rant, really. You have made a very good point. And as for the question, its dumbass quotient is right up there with the idea of cheerleaders in T20 cricket. The last few lines are also quite appealing; they are a hint of rationality and maturity in the writer. :)

Sounds kinda like what I am doing these days !!! Doing research on how the non-uniformly distributed capital losses in Insurance industry can be calibrated with a single model so that the future losses can be simulated ... PCA analysis is appropriate but Lagrangian Brownian Motion doesnt seems to explain everything there ...
